Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium at Amazon for $169. Give them anything less than 72 hours to warm-up and music is tainted by an uncomfortable trebly edge.
open back should be much better for (not only) gaming, easier to know direction of sounds. So DT 990 PRO. DAC is needed, without it volume just isn't enough for most people. I have this one paired with same headphones Link. But be aware that you will hear everything if you sit near, so that can be a solid deal breaker for some
Many gamers and streamers use open-back headphones like the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro. This is because open-back headphones prevent your ears from overheating and provide a more natural sound. That said, there are very few premium open-back headphones with a boom microphone for this niche.

They are both reliable and comfortable. Out of the box, the DT990 Pro would feel better. As the HD6XX needs a bit of bending and stretching of the frame to release some of its clamping force. With some wear, both can be worn for hours with no problems. The DT series of Beyerdynamics are known to be built like tanks.
I've decided they have to be opened (or semi-opened) and after hours of investigation I have two picks (Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro and AKG K240 MkII). In general I plan to spend most of the time on monitors, then some of the time on opened headphones and only a limited time on closed ones since closed ones are more fatiguing.

The DT880 is more neutral, less emphasis on areas of the spectrum. The DT990 however has more emphasis on bass in general and a slightly bigger peak in the treble. So if you want a neutral headphone, the DT880 would be the one. If you wanted a more fun headphone with more bass and stuff, the DT990 would be it.
I use DT 990 (also 250 Ohm) and I can tell you if you are in need of more volume, go for lower Ohm headphones. Or get a small headphone amp. Not saying DT's won't do you good. I run mine thru 18i20. Not the same interface but mine specs that usage up to 250 is fine. Prior 990 I was using a few AKGs with lower impedance. They were 'louder'.
The AE-7 is not 5.1 only. It has a dedicated headphones mode with additional options like impedance and there is also a direct mode. No idea what you are talking about. The AE-7 will be great with the DT-770 Pro. As someone with multiple $1k headphones and DACs, I've been happy with the AE-7 and creative regularly updates the drivers and app. 4.
In terms of the typical head fi phones, I have owned the DT880, DT990, K701, M50, Creative Aurvana Live, XB700, DT770 Pro 80, DT770/600, ES7, and AD700. I have heard/borrowed/tested Senn HD280 Pros, XB500, Senn HD428, and others I can't even begin to remember. Call ME crazy, but the DT990 is my absolute favorite headphone.
